The client’s vision for the site is to breathe life into this rather tired, yet prominent building and to create a sustainable and accessible workplace to support Cambridge industry.
The proposals aspire to the highest sustainability credentials and include highly efficient plant, new or refurbished double glazed windows throughout, and newly insulated roof to meet current building regulations.
Generator is located on the south side of Newmarket Road in Cambridge. The building sits on the edge of the Kite Conservation Area.
The building was previously an office and recently vacated and once refurbished, will remain an office.
A landscaped area to the front of the building has been added comprising planting and a new ramp to the entrance. A proposed courtyard has replaced the current unattractive block-paved hard landscaping with a quality scheme comprising soft landscaping, pavers and seating as amenity space for the building’s occupants.
The building appearance has been significantly improved with the removal the lean-to on Newmarket Road together with larger windows on the ground floor helping to create an active street frontage, a refurbished roof, replacement or refurbished windows, and enclosing the under-croft with windows and architectural grillage.
